21 Nettleton – the Secret Treasure of Cape Town
Presiding over a gently curving coastline lapped by brilliant blue waters on one side and forever -impressive Table Mountains on the other- Cape Town without a doubt is South Africa’s crown jewel. And at the centre of it, in the world-renowned pristine suburb Clifton, lies a 5-star service clifftop mansion- 21 Nettleton. This stylish and exceptional boutique hotel proudly stands against the slopes of the famous Table Mountain’s Lion Head and boasts uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean. With only six rooms spread over three floors, 21 Nettleton offers exclusive and relaxing atmosphere of a private home in which you are a most welcome guest.
21 Nettleton – The Mansion
After climbing from the street level via several staircases, you are exposed to an endless view of ocean and sky- an invitation to explore more of this stunning property. As you step into the hallway covered in a fluffy moquette and make your way even higher, a selection of carefully picked and matched paintings gazes at you from the walls. A mix of antique and bespoke art visible in each room shows a true admiration for craftsmanship.
It seems that every piece visible in here is a statement. Whether it’s an antique Chinese vase, baroque gold-framed mirrors or a painting of a giraffe with a diamond earrings and necklace.
Some may find this eclectic and rich decor a bit over the top. However- it creates a unique sense of homey atmosphere and coziness. 21 Nettleton perfects the beauty of a South African and Cape Town colonial style heritage with a touch of modernism.
The L-shaped indoor lounge and dining room is a truly inviting place to relax and enjoy evening canapés and sunset drinks. Which, as a lovely touch, are included in the stay. However, if you want a front-row sit for the daily sunset show, choose a spot on one of the comfortable sofas on the covered patio or the loungers on the lawn. And trust us -you do want to be here for this- the sundown spectacle over the endless ocean is quite glorious.
The forever-green garden is a wonderful place to be any time of the day. You can relax by a swimming pool carved around enormous granite boulders, use the sauna or the steam room. There is also a possibility to arrange an outdoor massages or a garden dinner. Imagine dining under the stars of the southern hemisphere, with the fresh ocean breeze deepening your appetite. It’s quite a romantic picture, isn’t it?
The Rooms
Each of the 6 bedrooms is unique in character and named accordingly to themes. There is the Queen Room, the Emperor Room or the King Room. We had the privilege to stay in the latter and enjoy almost royal luxury. The finest modern amenities wonderfully collide with regency-style furniture, baroque-gold clock, as well as Persian rug spread over the hardwood floors. The 56m2 room opens up on a large terrace overlooking the ocean and the Twelve Apostles. My personal favourite was the freestanding bathtub in the open-plan bath area.
The King Room has a separate lounge with minibar and coffee/tea making facilities.
In addition it is possible to rent the house on an exclusive use basis. It can accommodate a maximum of 12 adults and 4 children. All access and services remain at guests disposal. Full staff will also be here to ensure your stay is nothing less than extraordinary.
The Surroundings
The wonderful location of 21 Nettleton in Cape Town is its primary forte. To the west lies the uninterrupted panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. To the south, the guests can admire the imposing Twelve Apostle mountain range, as well as the tip of Table Mountain topped with a toy-like cable station.
Lions Head lies beyond the back garden. And through a convenient gate on the fully fenced property, the guests have a private access to the hiking trails up Lion’s Head, Signal Hill and Table Mountain. The exciting 3h loop trail leading all the way up to the Lion’s Head is not for the faint hearted. Yet, it’s a must experience for every adventure lover coming to Cape Town.
The mansion is located high above the beaches of Clifton & Camps Bay. It takes less than 10 minutes to reach them by car. Both are ideal for surfing, or sunbathing. But if you’d like to enjoy a refreshing dip in the rather cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, we recommend you to do so in one of the rock pools along the coast. The waves, however impressive, can be very deceiving.
In addition, the famous Waterfront area is roughly 10 minutes away. Will you wish to dine outside of the property, the concierge will be happy to make a recommendation as well as a reservation for you at one of the restaurants there. 21 Nettleton is truly the perfect luxurious getaway when staying in Cape Town.
